Tensions between nations intensify on September 3, 2017. The United States Geological Survey announced an earthquake of a 6.3 magnitude and shallow depth. It was near the Punggye-Ri test site, the primary nuclear weapons testing facility in North Korea. Experts have concluded that the cause was a nuclear bomb. This was the sixth live nuclear bomb test by the North Koreans.
A statement directly from North Korea claims they had tested a hydrogen bomb that can be mounted on an ICBM. Various agencies and institutes have suggested differing reports about the blast yield. Reports are anywhere from just less than 100 to several hundred kilotons in TNT equivalent. NORSAR for example, an independent seismic monitoring agency, reported 120 a kiloton yield.
